Fun Facts about The Wren House in The Woods
- The home has a lot of eastern red cedar. During the pandemic, wood was scarce, so Dave found a supplier in Indiana who has a mill. All of the wood came custom cut. Dave stained and finished for the beautiful grey toned finish.
- There is a large artesian well on the property that runs all year long. We can point you in the direction if you are interested. The water is run through a purifying system that makes it safe for domestic use—cooking & washing & drinking. The reverse osmosis water is for drinking. NOTE: If you use a gallon or so of RO water ir will run out–has to take an hour or so to refill its reservoir. For larger amounts of water just wait or use water in the fridge or pick some up.
- Spirit, the black lab came from Leader Dogs for the Blind. She was raised in a prison puppy program and when she went back to LDB, she did so well in training that they decided they want more of her. So, she was in their breeding colony. She is now retired and lives here as our pet. For more information:
- “Pick of the Litter” on Disneyplus (different org, but same ideas)
- There are a lot of birds around the Wren House all year around. A fun app is Birdnet. You can record the song of a bird and it will identify the bird and give info. Besides the cheery little wrens, we especially enjoy the woodpeckers and owls. We are thrilled when we hear peewees, though we have yet to see one.
- For your shopping pleasure, Potomac has a Dollar General and a Casey’s. Our grandkids love Casey’s pizza. Lola’s in Potomac serves large portions, and is a good way to get the local vibe. There is a Walmart in Danville, 20 miles east/south.
- The Middlefork River is a national scenic river. This waterway runs through the back side of our property. There is good kayaking/canoeing/tubing seasonally downstream at Kickapoo State Park. Also great hiking- if you want trails, ask Dave. He knows most places to hike and/or run near here. Our son-in-law dreams of kayaking to the Gulf of Mexico from our property. It is, technically, possible.
- There are 15 acres here. Basically, if there are trees on it, you are free to roam. To the east, the hill up to the neighbor’s home is the boundary.
- There is poison ivy in the woods. Water will neutralize the sap….wade in the creek, or better yet, shower after walking where there are not trails.
- The large mirror in the living room once belonged to Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys!
